Directions to Middlevlei

GPS Coordinates: 34°22' 01"S; 19 °06' 41"E // GPS 34°22.0166’S; 19°6. 6833’E

Middlevlei and Meerenbosch are on the edge of the Bot river lagoon just next to Fisherhaven. Directions are below. We recommend you print these out if you are unfamiliar with the area:

Get onto R43 to Hermanus as follows

From Cape Town:

Find your way onto the N2 to Caledon, George and so on. If you are coming from the airport, then follow the signs to Somerset West until you reach the N2. Drive over Sir Lowry's Pass, past Grabouw and Houwhoek to the turn-off signposted “Kleinmond and Hermanus”. Take this turnoff to the R43.

An alternative is to take the Scenic Route from Somerset West: Take the R44 from Somerset West and keep following the signs to Gordon's Bay and Kleinmond. You will then go through Rooiels, Betty's Bay and Kleinmond. Continue through Kleinmond and when you have passed the Arabella Golf Course on your right you will come to a T Junction. At that point turn right onto the R43, travel towards Hermanus and turn right at Fisherhaven, then follow directions as set out below.

From the Garden Route:

Find your way onto the N2 towards Cape Town, and follow it until past Caledon. About 23 km beyond Caledon is a turnoff signposted "Hermanus / Botrivier". Take this turn-off. Follow the road to the stop sign and turn left towards Hermanus. You will soon come to a T-junction, and again turn left on the R43 towards Hermanus.

Once you are on the R43 going towards Hermanus:

About 15km along this road is a turning to Kleinmond - DON'T take this! Carry on for about another 8 km, past Benguela Cove to the turnoff to Fisherhaven. There are signposts saying "Fisherhaven" and another saying "Meerensee". [If you reach a sign saying "Hawston", then you have gone too far, and must turn back.]

At the Fisherhaven turnoff, turn right onto China Marais road, and drive to the first stop sign. Beware of the speed control hump on this stretch of road - it can knock your teeth out if you hit it at more than about 20km per hour. At the first stop sign there is a sign that says Middlevlei, turn left here into Farm Road. Follow the road to the left, which takes a bend to the right (and then another hump in the road) and ends at a T-junction, which has a gravel road to the right. Turn left here, and about a hundred meters further is a turning to the right with signs to Middlevlei/Meerensee. Turn right onto this road which is a concrete road, and follow it to the Middlevlei entry gate.
